Becoming a foster caregiver in Ohio means providing a safe, temporary home to a child who cannot remain with their own family. Among the requirements: continuously maintaining current first-aid and CPR certification.

The first-aid requirement

Under the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC 5101:2-5-33 and 5101:2-5-40), foster caregiver training must include continuous maintenance of certification in a first-aid training program and a child and adult CPR certification program. Pre-adoptive infant foster homes must also complete infant first aid and CPR. The training ensures caregivers can respond to emergencies for children of all ages.

This is recognized by the Ohio Department of Children and Youth and the recommending agencies, and the certification must be kept current from a recognized organization. It is one requirement in addition to the pre-placement training, the home study and the assessment of parenting suitability.

Severe allergies and anaphylaxis

First-aid training covers recognizing and managing severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis), including the use of an epinephrine auto-injector.

How to meet it

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate meets this requirement. It is in addition to the required training or assessment, and is renewed periodically.
